# My MacBook Pro M5

Nearly two months ago, I purchased a 14-inch MacBook Pro M5, equipped with 24GB RAM and a 1TB SSD. After backing up my ThinkPad T14s and transferring my projects, I started using the device on day one. Since then, I’ve switched on my Linux laptop exactly once - only to shut it down in disgust after five minutes.

I feel confident proclaiming this MBP as the best computer I've ever used. Seriously.

It is fast. I'm not usually one for benchmarks, but I ran a few just to see if the numbers matched the feel. They did. This machine screams.

It is quiet. One thing that drives me nuts about x86 laptops is the jet-engine fan noise. I've only heard the fans on this MBP once, and that was due to some questionable coding on my part. Otherwise? Total silence.

It stays cool. I'm not sure when we decided it was "acceptable" for a laptop to get so hot it becomes uncomfortable to actually use on your lap. This thing runs so cool you'd be forgiven for thinking it was turned off.

The display is gorgeous. It's bright, the colors pop, and the ProMotion refresh rate is buttery smooth. It's a genuine pleasure to look at.

The battery life is crazy good. I thought people were BS'ing about the all day battery life, but it really is true. I can unplug my MBP on a Friday afternoon at work, take it home and use it over the weekend without giving the battery a second thought. Like I said, crazy good battery life.

The software is... fine. Look, macOS is not Linux by any stretch of the imagination, but it is usable. I've become very familiar with Homebrew and I managed to set-up my dev environment no problem. I don't think there is anything I am missing from my GNOME, other than the general workflow which I really liked.

If you’ve used Apple Silicon, you aren't reading anything you don't already know. But if you haven’t, you probably think I’m full of it. That may be, but seriously, do yourself a favour and try one. These things are magic.
